[NEW DATE] A Kind of Eden – Photography and the Pleasures of NYC’s Parks and Gardens (10/28) (Free)
Admission
- Free
Description
NOTE: THIS EVENT WAS RESCHEDULED FROM SEPTEMBER 23.
Join NYC Audubon and Alice Austen House for a special talk and photowalk around the house and museum. Feel free to bring your own camera, or rent one during the event (film available for purchase). No photography experience necessary; beginners welcome!
In this slide presentation and photowalk, Brooklyn-based photographer James Prochnik will provide a brief history of photography in NYC's notable parks and gardens, focusing on what attracted photographers like Alice Austen and many others to make pictures in NYC's city's greenspaces and environments. In addition to Austen, we'll look at NYC Park and Garden photography by photographers such as André Kertész, Vivian Maier, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark, Gary Winogrand, and many more. After the talk, inspired and energized by what we've just seen, we'll explore the varied grounds of The Alice Austen House and Museum, from the gardens to the beachfront, in search of our unique personal visions of urban paradise. Along the walk, James will offer tips and strategies for making your own park or garden photography project.
Registration required here. Limited to 30. Free.
Note on Accessibility:
This park has a mix of paved and unpaved paths on fairly flat terrain. The Alice Austen House museum is wheelchair accessible and contains a restroom. There is a small gravel parking lot behind the museum, accessible from Hylan Boulevard. Street parking is generally available along Edgewater Street at the corner of the museum. Otherwise, the site is accessible by the S78 bus. For more information about the Alice Austen House and Park, you can visit the museum's website as well as NYC Parks' website.
