Description
Join NYC Bird Alliance for a discussion with Indigenous land stewards Tanya Ball and Gillian Staveley. Both are from the Kaska Dena Ancestral Territory in Northern Canada, one of many indigenous communities working to preserve the Boreal Forest of North America—North America’s Bird Nursery. Hear from Tanya and Gillian on how sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration is essential for protecting bird species and northern biodiversity. The Dena Kayeh Institute works in partnership with the Boreal Conservation Program at the National Audubon Society.
About the Speaker:
Gillian Staveley is the Director of Culture and Land Stewardship for the Dena Kayeh Institute. Tanya Ball is the Land Guardian Coordinator for the Dene Nan Yedah Land Guardian Network.
About the Boreal Conservation Program
The Boreal Conservation Program at the National Audubon Society is a key part of the organization’s total fly-way initiative, where applied science is used to ensure bird conservation efforts are initiated at the places and at the scales necessary to protect birds throughout their full lifecycles. The program's focus is the protection of large landscapes within North America’s Boreal Forest due to its significance to breeding and migratory birds throughout the western hemisphere. To do this, the team works to elevate and provide support for Indigenous-led conservation initiatives such as Indigenous Protected and Conserved areas and Indigenous Guardians programs across Canada.
