Description

Join us for a special and fun event that combines both NYC Bird Alliance's NYCHA in Nature and Harbor Herons programs. In recent years, Yellow-Crowned Night Herons have built their nests in the Rockaways, specifically at the Hammel and Redfern NYCHA housing complexes. We invite local residents to join NYC Bird Alliance scientists to learn about these rare birds and help us count heron nests and chicks. Counting of these nests and chicks helps us keep track of their population and protect them.

The group will meet in front of the NYCHA Redfern Community Center at 15-44 Hassock St. No limit; No experience needed! Bring your family, friends, and neighbors! Free. We’ll also be visiting Hammel Houses in the morning to start the count—click here to learn more!

NYCHA in Nature is a partnership program with NYC Audubon and the Public Housing Community Fund to offer birding opportunities and exposure to nature for NYCHA residents and the general public. The program will explore the outdoor space within the NYCHA developments as well as nearby public green space.

Accessibility and Directions:

Terrain is flat and paved. The Q114 bus stops closest to the the meeting spot. Street parking can be found surrounding the NYCHA complex.
